Simpson Development Founded

Five Simpson brothers, all bricklayers form Simpson Brothers Construction specializing in masonry construction in Northern Virginia. Eugene and Clarence Simpson original company founders.

Simpson Brothers Construction grows into full size general contracting firm, Eugene Simpson & Brother. During WWII firm involved in many major military installations including Quantico Marine Base, Fort Belvoir, Andrews Air Force Base and Walter Reed Hospital.

Major school construction begins after the war effort. Simpson constructs 50 school projects in Fairfax, Arlington and City of Alexandria. In 1953, Clarence Simpson becomes the President of Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. In 1954 Eugene and Clarence Simpson help establish the Alexandria Little League and being the construction of Simpson Baseball Park. Donald Simpson completes his tour in Korea and joins the firm, and interior renovation of ten memorial floors of the George Washington Masonic Memorial is completed, a 30-year long project.

Simpson Development Company constructs Alexandria Hospital, and the city of Alexandria awards an urban renewal contract to Simpson Brothers. This major downtown urban renewal project, for the redevelopment of the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of lower King Street, includes Market Square, Tavern Square, Bankers Square and the City Hall Renovation. In 1964 Donald Simpson succeeds Clarence Simpson as President of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, and in 1969 the new Simpson Headquarters in the Lee Office Building is completed.

Simpson was instrumental in completing the transformation of the 3.5-mile waterfront Alexandria from Industrial to Commercial mixed use including the construction of the United Way Headquarters, the Crown Plaza Hotel, and the Trans Potomac Office Complex, a 304,000 square foot, 4 building project. In 1974, Simpson completes the $15 million transformation of the Torpedo Factory,a factory building originally built in 1918, into an Art Center on the waterfront. In 1972, the $17 million, 300,000 square foot Alexandria Hospital addition is completed. Simpson is also selected as the original contractor to construct Reston Town Center.

Simpson completed 2 major new hotel projects: the 23 story Tysons Sheraton Hotel worth $32 million, and the 30 story, 500 room Mark Plaza Hotel worth $40 million. In 1983, Eugene Simpson & Brothers Construction Company receives the AIA “Test of Time” Award for the construction of Market Square in Alexandria, VA. Simpson is also awarded the contract to complete the 12 story, 210,000 square foot Mark Center Office Building, a $20 million dollar project. In 1982, J.W. Bateson acquires ES&B. Third generation Simpson, Don Simpson Jr. joins the firm after graduation from Virginia Tech. In 1988, Simpson Properties is formed to manage and lease the Simpson Portfolio.

Simpson acquires 13 acres on Eisenhower Avenue from Lehigh Portland Cement Company to develop the ten building Alexandria Tech Center Office Park. Woodward & Lothrop Headquarters Building completed in Alexandria Tech Center along with Marriott Courtyard Hotel and AT&T Communications building. Early Street townhouse development completed with the sale of the last unit, a total of 30 units.

Donald Simpson retires from the Goodwin House Board after 37 years of services. Simpson Development completes a new Class A office building headquarters in Carlyle Development and completes new Lexus Service Center and Collision Center for Lindsay Automotive Group. Meanwhile, Simpson Properties is awarded a contract to manage the Lake Investment portfolio in Springfield, Virginia.

Miracle Field Project completed in city for use by youths and adults with physical and mental disabilities. Lindsay Chevrolet Dealership is completed in Woodbridge, Virginia, and Springhill Suites Hotel opens in the Alexandria Tech Center. Simpson Properties is awarded the contract to manage Lindsay Automotive, a 10 building portfolio.
